Property Council of Australia's QLD The Big Future Rebuilding Queensland Symposium

The Property Council's The BIG Future one day symposium will focus on rebuilding Queensland, restoring investor confidence and creating resilient communities in the wake of the worst flooding disaster and cyclone in the State's history.

The economic impact of the floods is simply staggering. Some key statistics sourced from IBISWorld's January 2011 report on the economic impacts of the Queensland floods include:

  • Reconstruction costs are estimated at $10 billion
  • Australia's GDP forecast has been revised down by 0.3%
  • Over 15,000 residential properties and 5,000 businesses affected
  • Between 70,000 and 90,000km of local government roads flooded.

We don't yet know the economic impact of cyclone Yasi.

The property industry is crucial to the performance of the Queensland economy and has been one of the hardest hit by the floods. In the past financial year, the State Government received revenue from property taxes of $3.5 billion compared to mining royalties of $1.9 billion.

This translates into 37% of total state taxes in Queensland and underlines the importance of the property sector in driving our economy and providing jobs for Queenslanders.

Therefore the property industry must be strongly engaged not only in the rebuilding of Queensland but also in the inevitable discussions that will follow on legislative and regulatory reform to mitigate future disasters.

This symposium provides the first opportunity for the industry to engage on these important issues and influence the direction of the inevitable reforms that will follow these disasters. This is a must attend event for anyone involved in the Queensland property industry.
