Be prepared! Storm season is on its way

Leading insurer Suncorp, and Green Cross Australia are joining to bring a series of Storm Season Community Forums to regional Queensland this month.

Hosted by Green Cross, and supported by Suncorp Insurance, these free community forums aim to raise awareness about severe weather trends, storm preparedness and green response.

Green Cross CEO Mara Bun explained the "Storm Season Community Forums were designed for communities throughout regional Queensland to share information about what the coming storm season means and the ways community members can act together and prepare.

"Our objective is to lead discussion about how communities can work together to be better prepared for storms and plan for how we can recover more effectively afterwards," Ms Bun said.

Each session will cover a range of topics - from what the coming storm season may be like, to rebuilding after major weather events like Cyclone Larry, the practical steps you can take to protect your home and the value of rebuilding green to save on energy bills and cut greenhouse emissions. CSIRO, Lend Lease and Building Codes Queensland will also provide information at the forums.

Steve Hussey, Manager Specialist Channels, Suncorp, explained that recent research by Suncorp[1] revealed that many Queenslanders are yet to heed the lessons learned from past storms experience.

"It's definitely a concern that of the Queenslanders whose homes suffered storm damage in recent years, only slightly more than half (59%) has made any changes to better prepare their homes against future damage," Mr Hussey said.

"These forums are about taking positive steps towards storm preparedness, and understanding the practical ways communities can protect themselves.

'Suncorp Insurance is very pleased to work with Green Cross Australia to help Queensland communities together to prepare for the coming storm season." Mr Hussey said.
